Is FSSP the same as SSPX? ›

The FSSP was founded by 12 priests and 20 seminarians who were formerly part of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), a canonically irregular traditionalist priestly society established by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1970.

The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (Fraternitas Sacerdotalis Sancti Petri in Latin) is a Clerical Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical right, that is, a community of Roman Catholic priests who do not take religious vows, but who work together for a common mission in the world.

The Holy Father confirmed with the priests that the Latin Mass restrictions in the Motu Proprio Traditionis Custodes do not apply to the FSSP, because “the use of the ancient liturgical books was at the origin of their existence and is provided for in their constitutions.”

The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (Latin: Fraternitas Sacerdotalis Sancti Petri; FSSP) is a traditionalist Catholic society of apostolic life for priests and seminarians. It is in communion with the Holy See.

As to “fulfilling a Sunday obligation”, if one is unable to attend Catholic Mass whether for reasons of ill health, travel or some other grave reason, the obligation doesn't hold. In short, one may attend Mass at an SSPX church or chapel; but one is NOT to receive Communion.

Pope Benedict XVI explained that the SSPX has no canonical status in the Catholic Church for doctrinal reasons and that SSPX ministers "do not legitimately exercise any ministry in the Church".

The Confraternity of St Peter (CSP) is formally distinct from the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter (FSSP). Any Catholic can join the former; but only priests and future priests can join the latter. Confraternity members retain full liberty and can decide to leave at any time.

On May 29th, eleven new priests of the FSSP were ordained at the Cathedral of St. Cecilia in Omaha, by His Grace Archbishop Terrence Prendergast Archbishop emeritus of the archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall.

The salary of ordained priests is quite modest and although FSSP priests do not take a vow of poverty, they strive to practice the spirit of poverty according to the Constitutions of the Order. The FSSP priest therefore strives to live simply, detached from worldly comforts and possessions.

We are active in 39 dioceses in the United States and 7 in Canada. We have 112 priests working in 54 apostolates.

Masses are celebrated daily at St. Peter's Basilica, and the service is free to attend for the public. You don't need tickets; however, you do need to wait in line and clear the security checkpoint.

They're not excommunicated as schismatics, because the Vatican has never said they are.... You can ... show that Lefebvre himself was not excommunicated and therefore no one else was.... I come to the conclusion that, canonically speaking, he's not guilty of a schismatic act punishable by canon law.

As mentioned above, SSPX priests advise against going to a Novus Ordo Mass in all places and circ*mstances, because it presents a grave danger to the faith: it places one in the position of trying to honor God with a liturgy that dishonors Him.

The SSPX is perhaps most infamous for selecting their own bishops contrary to the will of the pope. This behavior goes against divine law. Bishops receive their mission from the pope, not a society acting contrary to him.
